b'To be most effective, each program and each participants progression plan should include a well-defined path, a measura-ble goal, and a time frame thats spelled out, agreed upon, and truly understood before his or her first day in a work therapy program.Beyond just work therapy, its vital to properly structure all work/contribution relationships with the appropriate agreements, signed program requirements, defined expectations, etc. There must be clear lines drawn that distinguish each contribution category, whether employee, contractor, volunteer, intern, or program participant. It is in the best interests of the ministry and those served in any capacity to keep these relationships highly defined, equitable, and transpar-ent. Following carefully defined procedures not only protects your ministry and the precious people it serves, it can also make for a more effective volunteer, a motivated program client, a valuable employee, or an eager intern. Each term has implica-tions under laws and regulations, but beyond that, setting up these relationships fairly, ethi-cally, and thoughtfully is the right thing to do. Below are some guidelines for distinguish-ing work therapy participants from employees. 38 WWW.CITYGATENETWORK.ORG JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022'
